On any given day, the Royal Navy Ventile “Foul Weather” Deck Smock is one of the most sought-after vintage designs we come across. But this particular example is exceptionally special.
The smock itself is a gorgeous and intricately engineered piece, constructed from heavy-duty, rich navy Ventile cotton — an exceptionally high-grade, expensive-to-produce fabric renowned for its natural windproof and water-resistant properties.
This example is offered in excellent condition and, unusually, in a highly wearable size, approximately a Medium. These smocks are most commonly encountered in truly gargantuan sizes, making this one particularly appealing for both collectors and those who actually want to wear it.
The garment is highly adjustable, with drawstrings and straps at the hood, waist, hem and cuffs, allowing it to be cinched and secured to keep the elements firmly out.
As with all traditional military smocks, it is designed to be worn with a deliberately loose fit — both for ease of putting on and taking off, and to allow for multiple layers underneath in cold and foul-weather conditions.
A genuinely exceptional piece of Royal Navy history, and one of the earliest examples we have ever come across.
